NBC 6’s Adam Berg has the latest on the storm that could be a serious hurricane by the end of the week.
Less than one day after forming into a tropical storm, forecasters announced that Irma has become a captegory 2 storm.
Irma had maximum sustained winds of 100 mph, according to the 11 a.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Forecasters say it could become a category 3 storm by Thursday night.
The tropical system will likely strengthen over the next several days as it continues moving westbound at about 10 mph.
There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect. Forecasters are not expecting any impacts to land over the next five days, but will continue to monitor its track and development.
