Texas Girl Improves Rapidly After Obesity Surgery

A 200-pound Texas girl with a rare metabolic problem is showing signs of recovery after having a surgery doctors hope will halt her massive weight gain, NBC News reported. The girl's condition left her starving but gaining weight and with life-threatening health problems, including Type 2 diabetes. The girl underwent sleeve gastrectomy weight-loss surgery at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center earlier this month. Twenty-four hours after the surgery she was already meeting critical health milestones, including the reversal of her diabetes. “There was no sign of her diabetes 24 hours after the surgery,” said Dr. Thomas Inge, a pediatric obesity expert who has led her care. “My guess is she will not need insulin or anything else at this point.” The sleeve gastrectomy surgery removed about 80 percent of the girl's stomach.
