The late Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was honored Sunday by President Obama and others at a long-anticipated dedication of the new Washington, D.C. memorial to the civil rights leader. Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and the Ebenezer Baptist Church Choir paid tribute in song, and the ceremony included speeches by civil rights leaders Rep. John Lewis and the Rev. Jesse Jackson. Thousands of spectators appeared to honor King 43 years after his assassination, as did his sister and his adult children. The dedication of the new monument—Washington's first to a private citizen—was originally supposed to have occurred in August but was delayed when Hurricane Irene tore through Washington.
