Man in Wheelchair Fatally Detonates Pipe Bomb Inside Oakland Health Clinic

A man died when a pipe bomb exploded inside a health clinic in Oakland this evening in an incident that investigators are calling an apparent suicide, according to police and sheriff’s deputies. Terry McSweeney reports.

A wheelchair-bound man, who police believe may have been suicidal, detonated a pipe bomb in an Oakland health clinic Tuesday evening, killing himself.

Police responded to the San Antonio Health Center located on International Boulevard around 6:30 p.m. and talked to witnesses who said the man entered the clinic's lobby armed with the explosive device before taking his own life.

No one else was injured in the blast and authorities say the explosion was an isolated incident, police said.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office's bomb-squad was called to the scene, police said. Deputies conducted a search for secondary explosive devices out of an abundance of caution.
