2 Killed as Big Rig Plunges Off 60 Freeway

A semitrailer loses control on the 60 Freeway and causes a fatal crash. Gene Kang reports for NBC4 News at 6 p.m. on Sept. 2, 2018.

Two people died after a crash sent a big rig plunging off the 60 Freeway in South El Monte Sunday morning.

The crash happened around 4:40 a.m. on the eastbound side of the freeway when the big rig rear-ended a sedan and lost control, falling from the freeway overpass and onto Peck Road below, the California Highway Patrol said.

Both the big rig and the sedan driver died at the scene.

All but one lane of the freeway, as well as both northbound and southbound Peck Road at Durfee Avenue, remain closed until further notice, the CHP said.

Officials have not identified the victims as they continue to investigate what caused the crash.
