The Arizona Cardinals have hired the first female coach in National Football League history, the team said Monday.
Jen Welter will work with the Cardinals' inside linebackers as a training camp-preseason intern coach. The NFL Monday night confirmed to NBC News that she is the first female coach in league history.
Welter is a former college rugby player, 14-season pro footballer and the first woman to play a non-kicking position in a men's pro league, according to a Cardinals release: in 2014, she was a running back and played special teams for the Texas Revolution in the Indoor Football League.
