More than 25,000 people put on their sneakers to participate in the 30th annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles on Sunday, raising more than $2.26 million, organizers said.
The 6.2-mile walk kicked off at 10 a.m. West Hollywood marked the course’s beginning and ending location.
The money was raised for AIDS Project Los Angeles and more than 20 other Los Angeles County-based AIDS service organizations, according to organizers.
The AIDS Walk Los Angeles was the world’s first walk dedicated to fighting HIV/AIDS. Since its inception, the event has raised more than $76 million for HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and advocacy programs. All of the proceeds go to the AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) and more than 20 other LA County AIDS service organizations.
The AIDs Walk Los Angeles’ contributes much of its success to its strong social media presence. Whether it was in reference to the celebrity guest s or just the outpour of support, today’s participants actively shared their experiences on Twitter:
