Large Pipe Breaks, Floods Camino Del Sur

Camino Del Sur is a major route for residents of Santaluz and connects with Carmel Valley Road north of San Diego

City crews worked to repair a broken water pipe that flooded and closed a key route in and out of Rancho Penasquitos Tuesday.

The intersection of Carmel Valley Road and Camino Del Sur looked more like a river than a road after a 24-inch water main broke around 3:00 a.m.

Water filled the northbound lanes of Camino Del Sur for more than two hours before water was shut off.

A hydraulics crew was needed to close the large pipe at a slow rate otherwise they risked a rupture in other parts of the system.

San Diego City Water Services spokesperson said there were no customers without water because the line that broke is a transmission line.

As of 11:00 a.m., there was no estimate on when the pipe will be fixed or when the road will reopen.

Crews estimated it could take as long as this evening.

In the meantime, drivers are advised to go to I-15 and approach the SantaLuz area from Camino del Norte.
