A litter of "trash bag puppies" were found by a homeless man in Kern County as he rummaged through a dumpster.
When the man opened a trash bag to look for recyclables, he found eight, 6-week-old puppies. The man apparently then carried the puppies to the back door of a nearby business and asked the owner to call Animal Control.
Officials there said they were unable to provide care for the puppies so they eventually ended up at the Helen Woodward Animal Center. Now, each pup is named after designer clothing and are available for adoption at the center.
"Our Adoptions staff has named these puppies Dior, Gabbana, Prada, Armani, Chanel, Vuitton, Fendi, and Gucci," said spokesman John Van Zante. "They are scheduled to be available for adoption this Friday."
According to Van Zante, this is not an isolated incident and the problem only increases during the holidays. "More families get new pets during the holiday season than at any other time of year, but more than 80% of them come from breeders and puppy mills. That means that puppies like these could have died in that trash bag while puppy mill operators celebrate their most lucrative time of year," said Van Zante.
