A 2-year-old girl has died after being pulled from a pond by firefighters Saturday afternoon in Ramona.
Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters responded to a 911 call, made by the child’s mother at 3:15 p.m., at a residence in the 1800 block of Cedar Street, said Sgt. Tom Evans of the San Diego police.
Deputies and firefighters immediately jumped into the pond and located the girl in the deepest portion, which was about seven feet, according to a media release.
Visibility in the pond was allegedly almost at zero and so deputies had to feel around to find the child.
The child was unresponsive when she was pulled out of the pond and was airlifted to Rady Children's Hospital, where the toddler later died, said Sgt. Evans.
The pond was about 60 feet by 90 feet and irregularly shaped, said Evans.
Police are currently investigating the incident as an accident, and gave no information on how the child fell into the pond or how long the she was there before officials arrived.
