U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officers said the chase started at the Pine Valley Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 8. NBC 7’s Dave Summers has more from the scene of the arrests.

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) officers are searching for a fourth suspect in a pursuit following a "smuggling event" at a highway checkpoint Thursday.

Investigators told NBC 7 that the car reached speeds up to 100 mph during the chase.

CBP officers said a pursuit with a silver Ford Expedition started near the Pine Valley Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 8 around 5:11 p.m.

The vehicle stopped on the shoulder of Lake Jennings Park Road near Blossom Park Road in El Cajon at approximately 5:35 p.m.

Once they came to a stop, the vehicle began to billow smoke and the driver got out and ran away.

Shortly after, CBP officers detained the suspect, and he was taken to a nearby hospital. He was evaluated for non-life threatening injuries.

About 10 minutes later, two additional people suspected of being in the country illegally were also detained.

As of 6:00 p.m., officers were searching for a fourth suspect.
