A suspect is in custody after an hourslong standoff in Hillcrest. NBC 7’s Amber Frias has the latest details.
A standoff that took more than four hours Saturday ended after the suspect peacefully surrendered to police officers in Hillcrest.
Police received a call at around 4:10 p.m. about reports of a man who was believed to be seen with a firearm near the Hillcrest Heights Healthcare Center at 4033 6th Ave.
San Diego Police said the man barricaded himself in a laundry room area away from any of the patients in an isolated area.
The healthcare center was not evacuated during the standoff but was under a shelter in place order, SDPD said.
At 8:53 p.m. the emergency negotiation team (ENT) and SWAT team arrived at the scene to try and negotiate with the man.
"He's been extremely uncooperative with us. He's been vandalizing the place. He's been spraying a fire extinguisher," said SDPD officer Darius Jamsetjee.

At around 9:10 p.m. SDPD said the suspect peacefully surrendered and was in custody.
The man was described as a transient age 30 to 40.
Sixth Avenue remained closed as officers continue their investigation. Northbound 6th Avenue from University Avenue and the University off-ramp from State-Route 163 south were closed during the standoff. All roads have since reopened.
