Oops! Wide Load Proves to Be Too Wide for Street Light

A large-scale equipment move turned into a major headache for officials when the big rig struck a city traffic signal and closed the road for hours.

The collision happened around 11:45 p.m. at Paradise Valley Road and South Woodman Street.

CHP officers were escorting a wide load of solar turbines from Alpine to Otay Mesa when an oversized big rig couldn’t fit under a signal light.

“The truck tractor was a little too far to the right and it struck one of the light standards,” said California Highway Patrol Sgt. Damian Budwine.

In fact, the collision almost tore down the light officials said.

It was the fourth time the crews had taken this trip but it was the first time this type of damage occurred along the route.

It wasn’t until sometime around 6 a.m. that the roads re-opened to traffic.
