Sewage Contaminates San Marcos Creek

Water Contact Closure for the San Marcos Creek through La Costa Country Club

An estimated 31,650 gallon sewage spill occurred Wednesday at the Meadowlark Water Reclamation Facility on 7941 Corinthia St. in Carlsbad.

The spill was caused by a break in a 6 inch sewer line. Crews from the Vallecitos Water District discovered leak at 8 a.m. when they diverted flows back to the treatment plant. Roughly 21,600 gallons of the sewage was recovered so an estimated 10,050 gallons of sewage flowed into a storm drain that leads to the San Marcos Creek.

Warning signs of sewage contamination are posted along the San Marcos Creek where it crosses through the La Costa Country Club and will remain in place until samples confirm the water is safe for recreational use.
