Good Samaritan Assaulted, Carjacked in Rancho Santa Fe Crime Spree

A suspect and a Good Samaritan are in the hospital following an overnight crime spree in Rancho Santa Fe

A Good Samaritan is in the hospital after coming to the aid of another driver only to be assaulted and carjacked. NBC 7’s Chris Chan reports on the how this crime spree all ended.

A man was assaulted and then carjacked shortly after stopping to help another driver in a crash Friday.

This was only the start in an overnight crime spree in Rancho Santa Fe. The carjacking suspect later crashed the Good Samaritan's car and barricaded himself on the roof of a home, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The suspect, 33-year-old Joshua Harrington of San Diego was driving on El Mirlo Road around midnight when he ran off the road and hit a tree, the CHP said.

The Good Samaritan checked on Harrington but got more than what he bargained for when the two got into a physical fight and Harrington carjacked the victim's white sedan.

Harrington drove at high speeds for nearly two miles until crashing and overturning the car in the front yard of a home on Via de Fortuna Road, CHP says. When he got out, the suspect tried to enter the residence, police said.

"He pounded on the door, trying to gain entry," CHP Sgt. Brad Denham said. "Basically terrified the residents."

The suspect then climbed onto the roof and barricaded himself. The couple inside the home called the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. Deputies with the help of firefighters were able to talk Harrington off the roof, without any further incident.

CHP says the victim who tried to check on Harrington after the first crash was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital. Harrington was also taken to Scripps La Jolla. No word yet on either of their conditions.

CHP is investigating. They say Harrington is facing DUI, carjacking and battery charges.
