A multi-agency probation sweep led to the arrest of 13 people Saturday in Rancho San Diego, Spring Valley and Lemon Grove.
Deputies and officers checked on 33 probationers between 6:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. to see if they were following the conditions of their release.
The 13 taken into custody ranged in age from 17 to 49 years old. They were found arrested for violating probation, possessing controlled substances or having a dangerous weapon. In one case, the probationer was wanted on a warrant.
The sweep was part of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department’s regional realignment response group, which analyzes realigned prison populations to assess their risk to the community.
A federal court ordered the State of California to reduce its overcrowded prisons in 2011. To meet the mandate, non-violent criminals became the responsibility of local law enforcement rather than state agencies, so some offenders are now sent to county jails instead of prisons.
Deputies use data on known offenders and their associates to tie them to actual crimes and problem areas. High-risk offenders are the ones targeted by law enforcement sweeps.
In this latest round of check-ups, sheriff’s deputies were assisted by San Diego County Probation, Chula Vista, Coronado, National City and San Diego police departments.
