A high-speed driver zipped through freeway lanes and sped through surface streets during a chase Wednesday morning that began in City Heights and ended in a minor crash at an El Cajon gas station.
The pursuit began sometime around 7 a.m. after San Diego police received a call of a domestic violence incident and possible firearm threat in City Heights, according to the San Diego Police Department. Shortly after responding to the call, the suspect instigated the pursuit at 38th and Redwood Streets in San Diego.
As the driver of the SUV continued to evade traffic, California Highway Patrol took over the chase. The agency trailed the suspect as they traveled east on State Route 52 and weaved through traffic at a high rate of speed. Afterward, the driver exited onto surface streets in El Cajon and continued to travel quickly.
While law enforcement continued to pursue the driver, the SUV suddenly turned into an ARCO gas station on North Mollison Avenue just off Interstate 8. There, the SUV came to a halt after bumping the rear of a parked car and smoke appeared to come out of the hood of the pursuit vehicle.
Law enforcement officials then jumped out of their own vehicles with guns drawn at the SUV, prompting the driver to surrender with their arms raised. The driver, who has not yet been identified, was then placed in handcuffs and arrested.
Details on what led up to the chase were not immediately clear.
