Officer, 2 Others Hurt in Crash That Sent Patrol Car Into Store

Police said a man allegedly ran a red light and caused a chain reaction that caused a patrol car to strike a pedestrian and crash into a liquor store. NBC 7’s Jackie Crea has more.

A college police officer and two others were hurt when a crash caused a patrol vehicle to slam into a Barrio Logan store Wednesday, the San Diego Police Department said.

A driver ran a red light at the intersection of National Avenue and Cesar E. Chavez Parkway and slammed into a San Diego Community College District police patrol vehicle at about 9:10 a.m., SDPD said.

The crash sent the patrol vehicle across lanes of traffic, at one point striking a pedestrian, before slamming into the front of Ponderosa Deli Market, police said.

It was not clear what sent the patrol car through the market's wall but the officer was left with serious injuries to his leg.
Ponderosa Deli Market's owner, Wade Battikah, said he has own the store since 1984. When the patrol vehicle smashed through his building, he was in the back corner checking his phone. "Thank God I was in that corner because everything came in."
Investigators lined police tape around a large chunk of National Avenue & Cesar E. Chavez Parkway to look into the crash.
The view from the outside shows several streets blocked off for a police investigation.

Early reports from SDPD indicated that the police officer sustained serious leg injuries in the crash. Instead, she was taken to the hospital with minor cuts and bruises, police said.

The pedestrian tried to avoid the patrol car's path but was struck. The pedestrian was transported to the hospital with major leg injuries.

Emily Tamayo saw the aftermath of the crash. She said she saw a pedestrian on the ground bleeding from the legs.

The car that police said ran a red light was carrying the driver and one other person. The passenger reported pain and was taken to the hospital.

Police have not said if the driver is suspected of wrongdoing or will face charges in connection with the crash.

At the scene, a patrol SUV could be seen crashed through the glass of Ponderosa Deli Market.

A college police officer and two others were injured in a crash that sent a patrol vehicle into a Barrio Logan store. NBC 7's Liberty Zabala reports.

The store's owner, Wade Battikah, told NBC 7 he was injured but it could have been worse if he wasn't in the back of the store.

"Everything just pushed against me and it was just my leg and my back, but I’m OK," he said. "Thank God I was in that corner because everything came in."

Battikah, who has owned the store since 1984, said he would get his injuries checked but he was able to walk and felt OK.
