A water pipe broke in Old Town San Diego Saturday morning, creating a muddy mess at an intersection.

City of San Diego spokesperson Arian Collins said a 6-inch concrete water main ruptured at around 3:30 a.m. at Jefferson and Harney streets in the historic neighborhood. Crews were able to shut off the water by 4:45 a.m. and begin repairs.

Nearly five hours later, crews remained at the scene, digging around the area, trying to fix the break. The intersection remained blocked off to traffic; Saturday's rainy conditions only added to the mess.

As of 10:30 a.m., Collins said about 20 customers in the area were without water service. He estimated repairs would be completed by noon and water service would also be restored at that time.

In the meantime, Collins said a water wagon was set up on site to provide residents with water for cooking, drinking, cleaning and other needs.
