San Diego police, including a SWAT team, was investigating a parking garage near Petco Park. NBC 7’s Nicole Gomez reports.

A man was shot and killed in the Gaslamp Quarter early Friday morning, which prompted a manhunt for the suspect.

The shooting occurred around 4:30 a.m. at the corner of 6th Avenue and J Street near Petco Park in the heart of the Gaslamp. According to what witnesses told police, there was some sort of confrontation between a man who was shot and a group of others but it's not yet known what led to that altercation. However, investigators were told that they were at a party in a hotel before the argument.

San Diego police officers arrived within two minutes of the shooting, according to SDPD Lt. Steve Shebolskif. Upon arrival, they found a 29-year-old Black man who had been shot in the torso. Despite attempts to resuscitate him, he died at the scene, Shebolskif said.

Witnesses told investigators that two men between 18-30 who were wearing dark clothes had fled the shooting scene, possibly into a parking structure in the 600 block of L Street.

A SWAT team was called out, eventually clearing the garage, but, police were unable to locate the men.

Police were also told by witnesses that other members of the group involved in the altercation were in a white Jeep SUV that left the scene at a high rate of speed. Officers eventually located that vehicle in the 300 block of 5th Avenue and detained the man and two women inside for questioning.

Several streets in the area were blocked off for the investigation. Police are reviewing surveillance video from nearby locations, Shebolskif told NBC 7.

Officials are withholding the victim's identity pending family notification.
