Massive Tree Branch Falls, Damages La Mesa Apartment Complex

Residents of the apartment complex say children often play in the tree as well as on the patio crushed by the branch's weight.

NBC 7’s Chris Chan reports on the tree branch that crashed to the ground in the courtyard of a two-story apartment complex on King Street.

A massive tree cracked and a large branch fell at a two-story apartment complex in La Mesa early Monday.

La Mesa Police received a call at 4:45 a.m. reporting the downed tree on King Street. Some people said it sounded like someone had crashed into the parked cars on the street.

A large secondary branch fell and smashed the guard rails on the side of a deck.

No one was injured by the falling branches.

Resident Theresa Opielawski said she's thankful the branch fell when it did.

Usually her granddaughter spends her morning playing outside or walking the neighbor's dog.

"If it would've happened later... she very well could've been out here," Opielawski said.

The tree did fall on some cars parked on the on the street but only minor damage resulted.

Some residents are now wondering if the other side of the tree is going to give way.
