Thousands of East County students are facing an abrupt change in their education after a shift in district boundaries.
For example, students who planned to attend Grossmont High School, a top performing school are now within Monte Vista High School's boundaries.
“My child is going to be put into a far lower-performing school than where we were slated to go to,” said Jennifer Newman of La Mesa.
Students and their parents voiced their anger before board members of the Grossmont Union High School District Thursday night.
They say a shift in district boundaries was made without their input, and will harm their children's future.
“I contacted my middle school this morning, and I asked them about what happened, and the boundary changes and why wasn't I notified,” Newman said. “They said they weren't notified by the district.”
Superintendent Ralf Swenson said the district notified 16,000 families in the district which covers most of the East County.
He says the boundary change process was also posted on the district's website and in local media.
“There is always someone who wishes you could have communicated more and perhaps there might have been some other things we could have done,” said Swenson. “Our intention was surely to make people aware of what we were doing.”
