On the day of baseball's trade deadline the Padres were quiet, making no moves. Their bats were silent in Cincinnati as well until the fourth inning. Trailing 6-0, the Padres sent eleven batters to the plate. Six runs later the game was tied. Cameron Maybin had the big blast, a three run shot off Reds starter Homer Bailey. Chase Headley, still a Padre, added an RBI single in the inning to tie the game at six.
With the score all square in the seventh Padres starter Jason Marquis made a big mistake to Brandon Phillips. His solo shot broke the tie. Marquis (4-7) took the loss. The Reds, who had won ten in a row before Monday's loss, held on to win it 7-6.
The Padres ended the month of July with a very respectable 15-11 record.
