A wet, tired dog was rescued from a ledge along Sunset Cliffs Friday.
A crowd of people gathered as lifeguards climbed down to reach a large Chow lying still under a rocky portion of the cliff at Luscombs Point near Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and Hill Street.
Lifeguards received a 911 call reporting a possibly injured animal trapped on a ledge around 11:45 a.m.
"He was very lethargic, he looked hungry, he looked way out-of-sorts, said Scott Munzig, the man who first spotted the dog. “He certainly couldn’t get back up. He was stuck down there."
With a little help from rescue crews, the dog managed to walk up the rocky edge to the surface.
Lifeguards used a tool from animal control to help the dog while keeping it at a distance.
When animals are involved, it's impossible to know how they are going to react to crews offering help said Lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma.

"As it turned out, the dog had a very pleasant demeanor,” Lerma said. "You really don’t know until you get into very close quarters.”
The animal was taken by animal control officers for a medical evaluation.
"The fact that he can walk is a good sign," said Lori Weber with San Diego County Animal Control.
Weber said it was unclear if the dog was a male or female. She said they plan to scan the Chow for a microchip to try and locate the dog's owner.
