Dog Fatally Shot After Attacking Drug Enforcement Officer in La Mesa

NBC Universal, Inc. DEA Narcotics Task Force agents and officers were conducting a state search warrant at a house in La Mesa when a dog attacked an agent.

A dog was shot and killed after attacking a DEA agent who was carrying out a search warrant at a house in La Mesa Tuesday afternoon, according to the DEA San Diego Field Office.

DEA Narcotics Task Force agents and officers were performing an authorized state search warrant at a house at 4870 Harbison Avenue when the dog attacked one of the agents.

First aid was immediately given to the agent and he was transported to a hospital.

"In an effort to minimize the threat to human life, the dog was shot, and did not survive," Public Affairs Specialist Kelly McKay for the DEA wrote in a statement to NBC 7.

Four men were arrested during the search warrant seizure, according to authorities. It is unclear what the search warrant was for. Authorities have not released details about the arrests or what charges those arrested are facing.

Neighbors say people living in the home have been a neighborhood nuisance for years. Neighbors who spoke to NBC 7 would only do so off-camera due to fear of retaliation.

"There's all kinds of things going on there. There are cars going in and out all the time. We're sure there's drugs, and wee see prostitutes — we think, not 100% sure. We've been worried a long time about this place," one neighbor said.
