Closures Planned for La Jolla Village Drive and Genesee Avenue Intersection

This is the sixth of seven large beams that will be installed on Genesee Ave.

A trolley extension project is shutting down roads at a busy intersection in University City: La Jolla Village Drive and Genesee Avenue. NBC 7’s Ramon Galindo shares details of how this could impact drivers.

Daily closures of the La Jolla Village Drive and Genesee Avenue intersection start Friday night as construction continues for a Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) route to connect Old Town to University City.

From Friday, Feb. 8 to Friday, Feb. 15, there will be partial closures on the trolley bridge as crews install large beams to support the trolley alignment.

This is the sixth of seven large beams that will be installed on Genesee Avenue for the Mid-Coast Trolley Project.

This weekend, there will be closures of southbound Genesee Avenue lanes and through lanes at the La Jolla Village Drive intersection from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. There will be one lane open on northbound Genesee Ave.

For weekdays, there will be 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. closures each day. Two lanes will open on southbound and northbound Genesee Avenue Through lanes at La Jolla Village Drive will be closed at Genesee Avenue.

Weeknights, there will be 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. closures each night. The closures will be on southbound Genesee Avenue lanes and through lanes at La Jolla Village Drive Intersection.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and find alternative routes. Traffic control and detours will be posted.

The Mid-Coast Trolley Project began in Fall 2016 and is expected to be operational in 2021. Last January, the bridge that connects La Jolla to UC San Diego was unveiled.

The project in its entirety was expected to cost an estimated $2 billion, according to SANDAG. The project is funded by the Federal Transportation Administration and TransNet, the regional half-cent sales tax for transportation administered by SANDAG.
