Car Crashes into Tree in Chula Vista, 1 Dead

Two men were taken to the hospital with major injuries after their car went off the road and into a tree just south of J Street on northbound I-5 Sunday morning, CHP said.

They were trapped and fire crews had to cut them out of the car.

The passenger died at the hospital, CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt said Monday.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

The right three lanes of northbound Interstate 5, causing traffic to be backed up for more than an hour during the rescue.

As of Friday night, 29 people were arrested for DUI - up from 18 last year.

"I am a designated driver," San Diego native John Hammond told NBC 7. "It's just not worth it." 

"I don't want to see my friends get killed, and I don't want to get killed, and I know that there's so many drunk drivers out there, that they cause accidents. It's a bad deal."
