Caleb Paine Disqualified in Thursday Race, Drops to 15th Overall
Paine is appealing the decision

U.S. Olympian Caleb Paine of San Diego, California was in fourth place overall after Thursday’s races but has been disqualified from his best race of the day.
Paine crossed the finish line in second place in the final Men’s finn race of the day.
However, an athlete from Croatia filed a formal protest to the finish, claiming that he had the right of way when Paine’s boat crossed in front of him. A jury ruled in favor of the athlete and the second-place finish was removed, dropping Paine’s ranking to 15th overall.
However, according to U.S. Sailing, Paine is appealing the decision.
Fellow San Diegan Briana Provancha finished second in Women’s 470 duo despite tough conditions.
Provancha and teammate Annie Haegar faced 25-knot massive-wave sailing, she told U.S. Sailing.
“It was a very full-on day, and it was awesome. It was what 470’s are supposed to be raced in,” Provancha said.
The team struggled early on when a lock failed 15 seconds after the start. They fell far behind but managed a 10th place finish.
Briana Provancha and Caleb Paine, both of whom grew up in Mission Bay, visited junior sailors at the Southwestern Yacht Club before shipping out to Rio. NBC 7’s Steven Luke has more.
