Forward Spread of Road Fire Near Descanso Stopped, 5% Contained

The Road Fire is reported to be holding at 70 acres and 5% contained

NBC 7’s Kelvin Henry spoke to people in the Descanso area regarding the brush fire that broke out Saturday.

Forward spread of the Road Fire, which was started by a vehicle fire that spread to nearby vegetation near Descanso, has been stopped, the Cleveland National Forest said.

The Road Fire was reported by the Cleveland National Forest around noon Saturday as it quickly grew to 20 acres. Around 1 p.m., the Cleveland NF said the fire was holding at 70 acres with 0% contained and a moderate rate of spread.

By 3 p.m., the forward rate of spread was stopped and containment increased to 5%.

The San Diego County Sheriff's told NBC 7 evacuation warnings were issued for the Descanso area.

The 70 acre fire that erupted Saturday near Descanso is no longer spreading and 5% contained. NBC 7's Omari Fleming reports.

Caltrans San Diego said westbound I-8 lanes west of State Route 79/ Japatul Valley Road lanes are now opened to traffic after being closed due to the fire.

"I thought [the flames] were going to come over the peak, but the air tankers hit it pretty hard and they stayed on top of it," neighbor Steve Tucker told NBC 7.

Cleveland NF and Cal Fire San Diego firefighters are at the scene combating the fire.
