A bill to lower the drinking age for active duty military is making its way up Capitol Hill.
Two congressmen are co-sponsoring a measure that would allow 18 year olds to purchase beer or wine in restaurants.
The key here is that they'd have to remain on base -- which is federal property. That caveat skirts potential challenges with state and local authorities required to enforce the 21 and older drinking age.
18-year-olds would still be banned from purchasing any type of alcohol at military exchanges or stores.
The bill isn't expected to come up for a vote until mid to late 2011.
