Baby Born Along the Highway

A Chula Vista woman delivered her baby in the family’s SUV alongside Interstate 15 near San Diego

A father rushing toward the hospital early this morning while his wife was going into labor had to make a life-threatening split-second decision: should he pull over or continue on to the hospital?

Aaron and Nicole Reynolds of Chula Vista, expecting their third child, got that early morning sign the baby was on the way Monday.

The couple was on the way to the hospital just before 1 a.m. when it soon became obvious this child would not wait any longer.

“I heard my wife just continuously say ‘Push, push, push!’ As a father, you have to pull off to the side of the road,” he told NBCSanDiego.

A 911 dispatcher told Aaron to grab something to wrap the baby in so he hopped over several seats to grab his wife’s bath robe.

Before paramedics could arrive, the baby was delivered in the SUV’s passenger seat.

Little Jeremiah Calvin Reynolds was born right there at the Adams Avenue exit of I-15.

Emergency crews helped to cut the umbilical cord and then transported the child and the mother to Kaiser Permanente Hospital near Murphy Canyon.

That’s where the baby and mother are resting Monday.

Reynolds said the 911 dispatcher and the emergency crews did a great job helping the family.
