Groundbreaking for Project with Theater, Housing and UCSD Community Station

The groundbreaking was held Thursday for a multi-million dollar project in San Ysidro that will include a new black box theater, a UCSD community station and immigration services center. The property will be flanked by two residential buildings that will house 10 unites of affordable housing. The nearly 13,000 square foot project will retain the building that served as the first Catholic church in the city of San Diego that datse back to the 1920s, developers said.  The restoration of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church won’t be the only tihng community members will get from the project,  said David Flores, Community Development Director of Casa Familiar. “More socializing space. more cultural richness of the things that are here in San Ysidro,” Flores said. “We hope to bring those out by providing the spaces that we’re creating on the project. “ Applications for the residential units should be available in late summer 2019.
