5 Acres Burned in Rancho San Diego Brush Fire

The fire charred 10 acres, just feet away from homes. NBC 7’s Gaby Rodriguez has the latest.

A brush fire charred 5.1 acres in Rancho San Diego on Sunday evening, putting a neighborhood on alert.

The fire started around 6:25 p.m. and was rapidly spreading up the hill at the intersection of Greenwick Road and Brabham Street, according to Heartland Fire Department.

Brabham Street was closed for a time and some homes were temporarily threatened, prompting an evacuation that lasted about 40 minutes, the San Diego Sheriff's Department (SDSO) said. 

Cal Fire said an antenna at the top of the hill was at risk. 

Cal Fire San Diego and the San Miguel Fire Department worked quickly to stop the fire's forward progress by about 7:20 p.m., according to SDSO.

No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged. 

Cal Fire is investigating the cause of the fire.
