Detectives were investigating Monday two separate homicides in the city of Lemon Grove, which occurred within the span of six hours but were not believed to be connected.

The first call came in around 8 p.m. Sunday when someone reported gunshots in the area near the 2200 block of Washington Street. At the scene, a 38-year-old man was found dead with a gunshot wound to his head, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said.

The deadly shooting prompted a homicide investigation. No suspect has yet been located and the motive for the shooting was not yet known.

About six hours later, a man died after a fight at an apartment in Lemon Grove, SDSO said.

Deputies responded to reports of a fight and found a 51-year-old man in "medical distress" in an apartment on Grove Street around 2 a.m. Monday. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies have detained a 32-year-old man, who they believe was in a fight with the victim, SDSO said.

When deputies were first called, a stabbing was reported but SDSO Lt. Chrs Steffen said, "At this point it appears the alleged stabbing is unfounded, but a physical altercation did occur."

Neither the victim nor the suspect's name were released.

In both cases, the motives are still under investigation but they are not believed to be connected.
