Atmospheric River to Return to San Diego

Sunshine is on tap for Monday but keep that umbrella handy.

San Diego would see an increase in clouds Tuesday before the next weather system brings rain to the region as the work week continues.

NBC 7's Meteorologist Dagmar Midcap said conditions will start to change Tuesday as early sunshine gives way to mid and upper-level clouds moving in from the west.

The return of the atmospheric river will bring rain into the area as early as Wednesday afternoon. Rain will remain Thursday and Friday with another chance by the end of the weekend.

"For Wednesday’s rain into early Thursday, we could see 0.5 inches to 1.5 inches across the area," Meteorologist Sheena Parveen said.

Midcap said the Atmospheric River will align itself with the California coast and drop rain from as far north as the Bay Area and as far south as Baja California, Mexico.

Palomar Mountain received 2 inches of rain over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service. Chains were required Monday for travel on the roads up to Palomar Mountain.

San Diego's coastal areas reported between a tenth of an inch and a quarter of an inch of rain over the weekend with Carlsbad reporting .11" of precipitation and Oceanside reporting .25 inches.

In the valleys, Ramona reported receiving .09" of rain over the weekend with Santee reporting less than a half of an inch.

While in the mountains, residents living near Lake Cuyamaca received .62" over the weekend period with Julian recording .41" and Pine Valley recording .17".
