Those brief showers Wednesday down by the coast brought a beautiful blanket to Mount Laguna and other high-altitude locations around the county.
Rain and snow began falling around the county as early as 8 a.m. in some places, with winds of 20-30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph in the mountains and deserts expected through Thursday.
One mountain traveler said he was surprised by the white stuff.
"I was expecting rain not snow," David Degiorgio said. "We'll probably go hike in it. Throw a few snowballs."
Thunderstorms are likely this afternoon as the breaks in the clouds allow the atmosphere to warm up, then collide with the some cold, very unstable cells moving rapidly across the county. Not only could the situation produce abundant thunderstorms, but there is also the possibility of hail.
Snow – anywhere from 4 to 8 inches was possible as low as 4000 feet. Higher elevations could see 6-12 inches of snow. On Wednesday night, it’ll get even colder as temperatures are expected to be a good 15 to 20 degrees below seasonal averages.
