Urban Park Designs Unveiled

Designs for an urban park near the Horton Plaza shopping mall were unveiled for public viewing and comment for the first time Tuesday night.

Three layouts have been proposed, each featuring an amphitheater and some sort of water fountain.

The park will be built where the soon-to-be-demolished Robinsons-May building currently sits at 4th and Broadway, across the street from the NBC building downtown.

The plan calls for Westfield, which owns the mall, to tear down the old department store which currently houses Sam Goody, Abercrombie & Fitch and a space used by events such as THREAD.

The park, which has become run-down over the years, would be cleaned up and renovated.

The project also calls for some 200 events to held on the site every year.

The final plan for the $8.5 million project will be submitted to the city council later this year.

If all goes as planned, there's hope the park will be done in time for a New Year's Eve party on December 31, 2012.
