Sharp Memorial Hospital was recently voted the most beautiful hospital in the country, in an online survey.
Visitors of health care website Soliant.com hand-picked the hospital at the top of the website’s second annual 20 Most Beautiful Hospitals in America list.
Best and Worst in San Diego Architecture
An interesting tidbit: Though voters ranked Sharp Memorial at the top of this poll, the same building was also submitted as an onion (an architectural eyesore) in the San Diego Architectural Foundation’s Orchids & Onions.
Contributors of Soliant.com also had mixed reviews for the hospital’s design, which were featured in a news release.

"Sharp and its designers should be applauded for an exterior concept focused on creating a healing environment inside," one contributor wrote.
"[Sharp has] an arrogant main entry that doesn't relate to hospital operations, functionality or patient circulation … an ill-thought exclamation mark on a … plain building that provides minimal design interest," another contributor posted.
Ranking behind Sharp Memorial is the Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital in Michigan. The two hospitals were clear standouts among voters, with both grabbing nearly half of all the votes cast.
