$1 Million Awarded to Chicano Park

With the funding, the park will be able to obtain new lighting and playground equipment

Chicano Park in Barrio Logan has received a grant worth more than $1 million from the California Department of Housing and Community Development.

With the funding, the park will be able to obtain new lighting and playground equipment. The city is also hoping to enlarge the park’s plaza, build a skateboard area and repair one of the park’s fountains.

“Chicano Park is one of this city’s most popular parks and this grant will help us maintain it for future generations,” Mayor Jerry Sanders said in a prepared statement.

The park is near the Mercado del Barrio, a market being built adjacent to Chicano Park.

Proposition 1C through the House and Emergency Shelter Trust Fund Act of 2006 made the grant possible. The money must be spent within the next three years.
