For Valentine’s Day, a heart-shaped box of chocolates and a bouquet of flowers is cliché, and no one wants their expression of love to be laughable.
San Diego chef Jeff Roberto has taken this holiday tradition and turned it on its head. Named as the “2009 Chef of the Year” by Chef de Cuisine San Diego Chapter, its no surprise that Roberto is a little something out of the ordinary, just like his idea for the new aphrodisiac-filled box to give to that special someone on the love-inspired holiday.
His catering company, Sushi on a Roll (aka SOAR), presents the sushi box, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Designed to look like bamboo, the box is also a convenient rectangular shape that can fit in the refrigerator. Two “love potions” or varieties are available, one for the sushi-lover and other for the sushi “curious”. Both contain 35 pieces total.
Love Potion #1 (don’t worry, it won't make you smooch any law enforcement) contains pieces for the sushi novice—California and Philadelphia rolls as well as steamed edamame (soybeans) are easy on the palate for those not quite turned-on by raw fish. Brave the sashimi and avocado-topped Rainbow Roll when you’re ready as well as the Reverse Spicy Tuna Roll. This “potion” can be purchased for $50.
For the sushi-devotees, SOAR also offers Love Potion #2. A box filled with Yellowtail and Tuna Sushi, Spicy Tuna and Rainbow Rolls as well as edamame and Poke Salad is offered at $65. Chopsticks, Soy sauce, wasabi and ginger are included in both boxes.
Roses and chocolate-dipped strawberries can also be purchased (because even though they are cliché, what girl doesn’t love them?) Pop open a bottle of champagne and you and your special someone have a restaurant-quality Valentine’s without all the restaurant-quality crowded madness.
