Protecting Our Need to Valet

Somehow, no one seems to be sure why, the city of Encinitas decided it didn't like to valet park. That's now changing.

When the coastal community was founded two decades ago, city planners banned businesses from charging for valet parking services even though other coastal cities had no problem allowing the parking service.

"We couldn't figure out the history for it," Planning Director Patrick Murphy told the North County Times. "When we did research, our staff found we couldn't find any other coastal city with that regulation."

Last week, the paper reported that city staffers introduced a proposed ordinance amending the ban last week and expects to approve it next month.
