Shopping For Good

Build your wardrobe and your karma.

YOU 'BET: No one knows who first coined the phrase, "Good things come in small packages," but it's probably been said in reference to the Tibet Gift House in University Heights. This humble building boasts a wealth of gorgeous Tibetan jewelry purchased directly from artisans and street vendors there. It also offers literature and home decor items, and all are welcome to join in Tibetan meditation classes (with a $10 donation - call for dates and times.) Proceeds from the store go to help Tibetan monks and ministry.

THAT'S THE TICKET: Thrift stores are great places to explore, but what if you could buy brand new things and still help local charities? At the end of this month, you can! Macy's in Fashion Valley Mall is somewhat quietly promoting it's annual Macy's Passport event, where if you buy a $10 ticket for the event, you'll get a $10 off coupon that you can use toward any Macy's purchase on September 28-29. Plus, you're ticket will also get you 20% off your total purchase. The proceeds from the ticket sales go to support HIV/AIDS charities, so you'll feel extra good about your fabulous new digs.

GOOD LUCK: Father Joe's Villages has been helping the homeless and needy in San Diego for decades. This year, he is partnering with the Lucky Duck Foundation to host the San Diego Swing & Soiree on September 21 at the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club. For $100, you'll have access to an afternoon of upscale shopping, silent and live auctions, awards and entertainment, light fare and an open bar. If you're a golfer, $600 will get you all that plus course activities. Proceeds will help thousands of local homeless individuals build the skills and support they need to gain self-sufficiency, healthcare and employment. How's that for a productive afternoon?
