Fashion Valley Gets a Makeover

After 41 years, the Fashion Valley Mall needs a facelift.

The iconic shopping destination is getting a $15 million cosmetic renovation. Owners with the Simon Property Group announced Wednesday that the makeover will include new landscaping, flooring, a newly renovated food court and LED energy-efficient light towers.

Construction is scheduled to begin July 1 and will continue for 14 months.

“One of the most interesting features will be the living room vignettes that we’ll be adding,” regional vice-president David Johnson said. “These really will be areas that customers can relax, enjoy, take a break from all the great retail that we have here in a very casual, comfortable and entertaining environment.”

Fountains are planned for the plazas outside Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s, and 40 new palm trees will be added to “enhance the overall shopping experience as you stroll through the property,” Johnson said.

Johnson said the construction is planned to be done mostly outside of operating hours and phased-in in such a way that will have a minimal impact on shopping.

With a troubled economy, a consumer may ask, "Why Now?" The last cosmetic renovation to the property was done more than 13 years ago.

Johnson said that Fashion Valley mall is a huge asset for Simon Property Group and that the company considers it the best shopping mall south of Los Angeles.

“With all the luxury retailers here -- and with us not having reinvested in the mall in 13 years -- now is the right time to reinvest in the center,” Johnson said.

The mall is home to Tiffany & Co., Nordstrom’s, Bloomingdale’s, Hermès, Carolina Herrera and Kate Spade. A new Disney store is scheduled to open there this fall.

Owners would not answer any questions Wednesday about which retailer might replace Saks Fifth Avenue, which will be closing in mid-June.

Fashion Valley Mall was built in 1969, and the last renovation began in 1997.
