What Took So Long?

Big Bear brings back ice skating

Now that mother nature is cooperating and dumping lots of snow up at Big Bear the resort has pitched in with a new winter attraction: a huge outdoor ice skating rink.

It opened in the heart of the Village on Friday and will remain open through the season.  It's the first public rink in Big Bear in some 30 years.

Iceland, the old indoor rink, closed its doors back in the 70s; the last outdoor rink dates all the way back to the 1930s.  Many visitors have wondered why there was no rink available at this, the biggest and grandest of Southern California winter resorts.

"The age old question has finally been answered.  Yes indeed, Big Bear now has an ice rink," Big Bear Lake Resort Association Visitor Information Service Director Rebecca Hrabia said.

The Ice Garden Skating Rink is 5,000 square feet big.  It's open seven days a week, from noon to 6 p.m. (8 p.m Fri/Sat) through the first week of April, weather permitting.
