Weekend Events: Sept. 14-16

As San Diego’s weather remains rather warm, chill out with some cool events throughout the county.

Friday, Sept. 14


San Diego Bay Fair

7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Mission Bay
See extreme boating in your own backyard when the San Diego Bay Fair races into town. More than 100,000 people are expected at the three-day event. Mission Bay will be packed with race fans and participants in the family fun day, so make sure to get there early.

Movie in the Park
7 p.m. at Little Padres Field in Kimball Park
Warm nights are fading fast, so take the family to watch a movie outside. “Moneyball” will be playing in National City as part of the final weeks of Movies in the Park. The screening is free and open to the public.

Taste of Solana Beach
11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at South Sierra Ave.
Nosh on some of the tastiest grub Solana Beach has to offer. Nearly 20 restaurants will have tastes available, and those who try all the eateries can enter to win a prize. Tickets cost $25 and proceeds benefit the River of Hope Foundation.

Saturday, Sept. 15


Coastal Cleanup
9 a.m. at various locations
Thousands of San Diegans will be participating in the largest coastal cleanup event of the year. More than 80 sites will be cleared of trash and debris. I Love A Clean San Diego is sponsoring the event, which is held on the same day as the statewide initiative to keep beaches clean.

Coronado Art Walk
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Coronado Ferry Landing
Art lovers can stroll through scenic Coronado this weekend for its annual art walk. The two-day outdoor festival is hosted by the Coronado Historical Association and aims to foster creativity and appreciation for local artists and vendors. This is a free, public event.

San Diego Music Thing 
10 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. at Lafayette Hotel
Musicians, producers and music enthusiasts are gathering at the two-day event to discuss the modern-day entertainment scene. Naturally there will be plenty of live performances in addition to happy hour parties and a trade show. Tickets start at $25.

Sunday, Sept. 16

Encinitas Blind Surfing Event
9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at South Ponto Beach in Carlsbad
The Encinitas Lions Club are teaming up with local businesses to help visually impaired residents experience surfing in San Diego. At this 17th annual Surfing Clinic for the blind and sight impaired, participants are given instruction, and assisted in the water by local surfing instructors and volunteers as they challenge themselves to balance atop surfboards.

Restaurant Week
Various times and locations
Enjoy dishes from some of San Diego’s best restaurants during Restaurant Week, when three-course meals are offered from $15-$40. More than 180 restaurants are participating in the event featuring special lunch and dinner menus. For information on restaurants, check the San Diego Restaurant Week website.

Fleet Week Sea Festival
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Naval Base San Diego
People are invited to board U.S. Navy ships for the two-day festival. Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen will be available to talk about living on a ship. The event is free and open to the public.
