Time for a Compromise?

The alcohol ban on San Diego beaches is not expected to stop the drinking in the beach community this Fourth of July weekend. In fact, residents in one neighborhood say the ban has actually pushed the problem into their backyard.

Kate Sessions Park has always been a popular place during the summer time.

"It's a treasure. It's a beautiful park," Eileen Adler said.

But since the beach alcohol ban, some people say it has become too popular.

"There's more traffic, there are more kids, there is more noise," Adler said. "It's just the weekend crowd that has spoiled it for everyone."

Since the ban, the parties are almost every weekend, according to police.

"We get complaints about public urination. We get complaints about littering," said Capt. Christopher Ball.

Miles Shumilak is the unofficial online organizer of this weekend's party at Kate Sessions Park. His Facebook group already has more than 700 RSVP's.

"It's going to be wild," he said. "You can't stop the tide. You're going to have to create some avenue for people to enjoy themselves outdoors on the fourth.”

"There are certainly compromises that can be discussed, that quite frankly I believe could work," Capt. Ball said.

Those compromises could include a ban on kegs, and a ban of alcohol altogether on major holidays -- some of the same suggestions as before the beach ban.

"It's the same problem. It's just a different location," Capt. Ball said.

But Shumalak says it can be different this time, which is what he's trying to tell his guests.

"Have fun, but just don't be stupid.  Let's keep this going," Shumalak said.

Police say trash is one of the most common complaints. Shumalak said he's already had numerous groups contact him offering to volunteer their time to cleanup.
