Some Things Can Go Too Well

The overwhelming success of a Disney promotion that offers a free day pass for a day of volunteering has created an unusual problem for area nonprofits -- too many volunteers, the North County Times reported.

Disney's "Give a Day, Get a Disney Day" promotion, which requires people to register online then complete a day of service before a park pass is issued, began on Jan. 1 with the goal of registering 1 million volunteers by Dec. 15.

Volunteer coordinators for local nonprofits said hundreds of people have called, stopped in or sent e-mail requests looking for volunteer positions so they can earn the free park pass, the paper reported.

"We've definitely been inundated with responses," said Matt Koumaras, executive director for the Boys & Girls Club of Vista.

Read said the group had to close registration for a few days so employees could manage e-mails and calls from people seeking service opportunities. The group is once again accepting volunteers.
