If you want to catch some Olympic-style athletic action without flying across the globe for the London Games, then the San Diego Crew Classic is for you.
On March 31 and April 1 thousands of athletes from more than 100 clubs, universities and colleges from across North America will be participating in multiple races. It’s one of San Diego’s biggest athletic events of the year – and is easily one of the largest gatherings of rowers on the West Coast.
A beer garden, sponsored by local-favorite Karl Strauss, will be kicking off the event from 1 to 6 p.m. on Friday, March 29 at Crown Point Shores located on Mission Bay. But make sure to head to bed early Friday night, because races begin at 7:30 a.m. the following day. Get ready to cheer on some locals, including San Diego State’s rowing club and the UC San Diego team.
Looking for some fun after the competition? The 21 and over crowd can head to the Brew and Crew event from noon to 3 p.m. on both days, where band Everest and Eric Hutchinson will play. Local breweries will be serving up plenty of suds and food trucks will provide hot-off-the-grill gourmet grub. Brew and Crew tickets start at $20 for designated drivers, and $40 for those sampling beer.
Families can also enjoy the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park Family Festival from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Youngsters will have plenty of fun options with the bounce house, climbing wall, obstacle course and face painting.
Ticket prices for Crew Classic located are $10 in advance and are available for purchase on the event website. Parking is $15 per car at Crown Point Shores, but there is free shuttle from free parking at Ski Beach. For more information, visit the San Diego Crew Classic website.
