Ramona Rocks

The tiny Mainstage Theatre in Ramona played host to some big talent Thursday night.

The second annual Rock Recital event for students of local Ramona Music Center was followed with performances by San Diego’s own progressive/alternative rock band Spero Lumina, and Into the Presence from Los Angeles featuring guitar virtuoso Luis Maldonado and former Primus drummer Tim Alexander.

Over thirty individual students ranging from young children to older adults first took the stage of the restored theater in turns to display skills acquired in the last year.

Beginning guitarists picked slow and careful notes accompanied by instructors.

Intermediate guitarists and keyboard players performed impressive covers and original works.

Finally the most advanced individuals wowed the audience with difficult pieces from the likes of Guns n’ Roses and Joe Satriani.

When the many parents and friends in attendance had given their last applause, traveling act 'Into The Presence' took the stage to prove why some have called their self-titled CD release one of the best rock albums of the year.

After a short set of truly incredible music they handed the house along to Spero Lumina for much more great rock β€˜n roll lasting late into the night.

Jon Hasz and the instructors of the Ramona Music Center, together with all participants involved, provided an unforgettable evening.

Seeing young musicians play for an audience for the first time then hearing professional acts of this caliber on the same stage in the same evening was a fun and amazing experience for all in attendance.
