Top Local Spots for Families

Where should you take the kids around town? A parenting expert lists the top beaches and parks for families in San Diego.

If you’re planning a “stay-cation” this summer to save money, consider some of San Diego’s family-friendly beaches or parks.

Here’s a look at a few of the best spots to take a family with young children in San Diego according to Ruth McKinnie Braun from suchasmartmom.com.

She has rated our parks based on several features including lifeguards on duty, restrooms, playground, outdoor showers and parking.

La Jolla Shores:
“Playground right on the beach that’s in the process of being refurbished that should be complete by mid-June. There’s ample parking if you get there early. Surf is mild for the little ones,” said Braun.

Moonlight Beach:
”This beach has a playground with an ocean view, barbecues, volleyball courts, grassy area and a concession stand,” according to Braun.

Coronado:
It’s wider than most beaches in San Diego and if you don’t park near the Hotel del Coronado, you can find a restroom, lifeguard and volleyball area near Isabella Avenue.

San Dieguito County Park:
“This park is minutes away from I-5 and you would never know it,” said Braun. The lower portion is ideal for smaller gatherings. The upper portion has horseshoe pits and walking trails. Parking is $3.

She also recommends Rohr Park in Bonita and Old Poway Park because they are both just off the beaten path and offer train rides at different times of the month.
